History

The Spring Rollers wheelchair tennis group was founded in March, 2014 by Stelios Vafiadis. Stelios, a strong and athletic Greek, was an engineer who loved the game of tennis. When he retired, he looked for ways to give back to the community, and wheelchair tennis became a perfect opportunity.

Stelios did all of the leg work to get the program started: getting certified to teach, meeting with the Parks and Recreation Department to reserve the courts, working with USTA to arrange equipment and sport wheelchairs, finding volunteers to help and publicizing the program.

Sadly Stelios lost his battle with cancer in December 2015, but his dream lives on! The Spring Rollers thrives thanks to his leadership, vision and inspiration for the players to continue.

He is fondly remembered for his constant command to "KEEP MOVING!"

Mission

Our mission is to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to develop independence, confidence, and fitness through participation in community sports and  recreation, to change negative stereotypes and to help develop confidence, social integration and community development.

At every opportunity, we work to pursue our vision that “every person, regardless of ability, has an equal opportunity to participate in sports and recreation in their community.”

Our Purpose

Since 2014, Spring Rollers of the Woodland has focused on one goal: To improve the lives of youth and adults with disabilities by providing sports and recreation opportunities and create an atmosphere of belonging and integration into the community.

Disabilities might include amputation, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, other neuromuscular/orthopedic conditions, autism and related intellectual disabilities.

These sports opportunities transform the people we serve, highlighting the potential in each of us, embodied in our motto: “I am not disabled. Instead, I am simply abled in different ways!”
